As an accountant, when disaster strikes, I cope by putting numbers to it. So when I heard about the assassination attempt on President Trump this weekend, I did some research.
The findings? Being President is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world:
-27% of US presidents (12 out of 45) have faced assassination attempts
8.9% (4 out of 45) were assassinated in office
The 4 presidents killed in office: Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy
8 more survived attempts, including Jackson, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Truman, Ford (twice), Reagan, and now Trump
Think about that - over 1 in 4 chance of facing an attempt on your life as a US president. It's a risk we forget about when it hasn't happened in a while.
Regardless of politics, we should all condemn this kind of violence. No leader should fear for their life. How can we make the presidency safer in this country?
