Imagine completing a bachelor's AND a master's degree in just over four months. Sounds impossible, right? On our latest podcast episode, I chatted with a future CPA who did exactly that through Western Governors University.
When I was in college, taking more than five classes at a time was a stretch. I asked him, "How did you pull this off?"
Ken explained that at WGU, once you pass a course, the next one unlocks. Exams are available anytime—even at midnight when his kids are asleep. He was completing two to three courses a week!
Curious about the cost, I asked, "How did you afford this?" Turns out, WGU charges a flat fee per six-month term—about $5,000 for a bachelor's degree. Under $10,000 total for both degrees? I was amazed. It's like an all-you-can-eat buffet of education.
Balancing work, family, and this intense study schedule wasn't easy. Ken credited his wife for her incredible support. Working 40 to 50 hours a week in the mortgage business, he'd wake up at 5:30 a.m., work till 5 p.m., spend time with his kids, and then study from 7 p.m. till midnight. His dedication was off the charts.
Ken wanted to provide for his family and have a backup plan if anything happened with his job during the downturn.
After finishing his bachelor's in three months, he took a short break and then tackled his master's in accounting, completing it in just over a month. He needed those extra credits to reach the 150-hour requirement for the CPA.
Ken's story is a remarkable example of what's possible with determination, support, and an innovative approach to education. It challenges traditional timelines and costs associated with earning degrees.
