The race to reform CPA licensing — which state will be next?
The race to reform CPA licensing is ON. And it's moving faster than expected.
Scott Wiley, President of the Ohio Society of CPAs, shared some amazing numbers with me: 30+ states plan to file reform bills in 2025. Not more committees—actual legislation.
Here are the details 👇
What's happening RIGHT NOW:
7 states already have bills filed
California (#1 for CPA population) files next month
9 of the 10 largest CPA states are planning bills
Together, these states represent 75-80% of ALL US CPAs
Who's already got bills filed?
Texas (#3)
Florida (#5)
Ohio (#7 with 36,000 CPAs) - SIGNED
Virginia
Indiana
Maryland
Utah
Who’s drafting bills?
New York (#2) is focusing on automatic mobility, while Illinois (#4) and Pennsylvania (#6) are looking at both mobility AND new pathways to becoming a CPA.
This matters because:
If you're a CPA: Working across state lines will get easier
If you're studying: The path to licensure will get faster and cheaper
If you're hiring: Your talent pipeline will expand
